Job Description

If you are passionate about building, learning, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, this internship offers a unique opportunity to address real-world issues alongside a talented and driven engineering team. We are particularly interested in AI-native individuals who already integrate AI tools into their daily development practices for coding, debugging, testing, and technology acquisition.

As a Backend Engineering Intern at Atlan, you will gain valuable insights from experienced engineers, develop a deep understanding of customer needs and market dynamics, and contribute to building AI-native systems where AI is a fundamental component of the product and user experience.

You will have the chance to contribute to our app framework, which allows developers to build applications on Atlan; develop high-performance connectors that span the modern data ecosystem; enhance our core Metastore and next-generation Metadata Lakehouse, built on Apache Iceberg; or work on platform and infrastructure projects such as service isolation, operator rollouts, backups, observability, and automated maintenance procedures.

Responsibilities

• Learn from seasoned professionals with extensive industry experience. Develop a comprehensive understanding of customer needs, market dynamics, and the key drivers of success.
• Build AI-native systems and experiences, integrating AI not just as an added feature but as a central element of our product and user interaction.
• App Framework: Contribute to Atlan’s innovative app framework, empowering developers to create scalable applications directly on the Atlan platform, thereby accelerating customer customization and extension capabilities.
• Connector Development: Develop and scale connectors that expand Atlan’s reach across the modern data ecosystem, enhancing integrations, improving performance, and facilitating seamless data flow between systems.
• Metastore: Work on one of Atlan’s most critical microservices: our Metastore, a metadata management system that houses all metadata ingested into Atlan. It underpins our platform and product, serving as the backbone for how teams discover, govern, and collaborate on data.
• Metadata Lakehouse: Participate in building Atlan’s next-generation metastore, designed for the future of data management. The Metadata Lakehouse combines modern data lake/warehouse architectures, Apache Iceberg, and high-performance metadata systems to scale with the evolving needs of data and AI teams.
• Platform & Infrastructure: Contribute to the infrastructure that ensures Atlan operates smoothly, including our Metastore and Metadata Lakehouse infrastructure. Address challenges related to service isolation, operator rollouts, backup systems, observability, and automated maintenance workflows to maintain a reliable, scalable, and resilient platform.

Qualifications

• AI-Native: You are a builder who actively uses AI tools in daily development tasks, such as coding, debugging, testing, or learning new technologies.
• Technical Proficiency: (These skills are desirable but not all required.)
• Experience with one or more of Java, Python, and Go.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes, Helm, Argo, Temporal, or other cloud-native tooling.
• Knowledge of Apache Iceberg, data lake/warehouse architectures, and data pipelines.
• Passion for Problem-Solving: You are enthusiastic about solving real-world problems for data teams.
• Teamwork and Leadership: You possess excellent teamwork skills and demonstrated leadership abilities, thriving in collaborative environments.
• Public Contributions: You can showcase your coding abilities through contributions to public projects, ideally with an active GitHub profile.
