These personnel will contribute to Research & Development programs across meteorology and related fields, operating under the Mission Mausam Scheme on a contractual basis.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Research and Development activities aimed at upgrading the meteorological observation network. This includes replacing outdated or worn-out meteorological instruments at field stations with advanced, state-of-the-art equipment to ensure the collection of highly accurate data.
  • Enhance test and calibration facilities used for meteorological instruments.
  • Implement rigorous quality management protocols for meteorological data.
  • Contribute to Web-GIS and IT-enabled services, focusing on data visualization techniques.
  • Provide meteorological services, specifically including agro-meteorology expertise.
  • Manage and process weather and crop data, analyze weather events (including extreme weather occurrences), and assess their impacts, mitigation strategies, and adaptation measures within the agricultural sector for climate risk management.
  • Work with crop simulation models and develop decision support tools, utilizing Remote Sensing and GIS technologies, as well as other open-source software, to develop weather-based Agromet advisory products and interpret them into actionable Agromet advisories.
  • Conduct Weather Forecasting and Services activities, covering Nowcasting, Short-Range, Medium-Range, and Long-Range forecasts, Cyclone warnings, and Numerical Weather Prediction.
  • Work with High-Performance Computing Systems (HPCS).
  • Utilize programming languages (such as FORTRAN 90, C/C++, etc.), shell scripting, and meteorological data analysis tools (like GrADS, FERRET, NCL, NCO, CDO, etc.).
  • Manage large volumes of data and possess familiarity with data formats like NetCDF, HDF, GRIB, etc.
  • Work with open-source geographical information tools for meteorological applications.
  • Possess knowledge of UNIX/LINUX System Administration.
  • Have a working knowledge of various statistical tools used in research and data analysis.
  • Contribute to Web-GIS and IT-enabled services, focusing on data visualization.
  • Work on Climate predictions (extended, seasonal, and beyond), Climate Data products and services, and Climate Research.
  • Work on hydrological data, drought monitoring/forecasting, along with GIS applications, including web SIS for various climate products, and the use of remote sensing data, etc.
  • Provide Environment and Air Quality Warning Services.
  • Conduct research on atmospheric composition (GHGs, Aerosol, Ozone, and other trace gases, etc.) and disseminate information for national and international policymakers.
  • Develop forecasts of future environmental conditions and their consequences for people.
  • Observe trends in aerosol physical and chemical properties, GHGs, Ozone, and trace gases.
  • Develop adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Determine the exposure and assess the effects of air pollution on health and ecosystems.
  • Develop warning systems for the prevention of undesired air pollution episodes.
  • Facilitate source apportionment and identification.
  • Provide meteorological services, specifically including Polar Meteorology expertise.
  • Conduct research work on weather forecasting in the polar region.
  • Work on meteorological and atmospheric processes governing air-ice interactions over Polar Regions and assess the probable teleconnection between Polar Regions and the Indian Summer Monsoon.
  • Study the temporal and spatial variability of meteorological parameters and atmospheric composition in order to provide early detection and subsequent long-term monitoring of changes in the physical and chemical state of the atmosphere.
  • Provide support for reliable weather forecasts in Polar Regions for the protection of indigenous communities and in support of air and marine logistical operations, as well as in support of scientific research programmes.
  • Management of Environment Monitoring Network.
  • Focus on Satellite Meteorology and Remote Sensing.
  • Receive and process data from different polar orbiting satellites on a real-time basis and disseminate the products to forecasters and the research community by establishing a receiving and processing system.
  • Perform real-time validation of various satellite products derived operationally.
  • Assimilate all possible satellite data into numerical weather prediction models to improve forecast accuracy.
  • Develop RAPIDNxt online visualization and analysis software tools for satellite data and products, making them available to the entire forecasting community (IMD, IAF, and Navy) and adjoining SAARC countries.
  • Establish an in-situ calibration and validation site for the INSAT series satellite and its operationalization at Runn of Kutch, Gujarat.
  • Conduct inter-calibration of Imager and Sounder observations from the time series of geostationary satellites (IOGEO).
  • Generate the Fundamental Climate Data Record (FCDR) of calibrated and quality-controlled geostationary sensor data.
  • Utilize the inter-satellite methodology developed by GSICS to tie existing time series of satellite data to the best reference available in space.
  • Develop product and satellite-based expert systems with National and International collaboration in respect of Auto-tracking of cyclones, thunderstorms, severe weather phenomena, and development of severe warning indices.
