The Transportation Operation Center (TOC) functions as the central hub for managing and controlling transportation execution across Amazon’s expansive supply chain network, supporting diverse geographic regions including North America, India, and Europe. TOC’s primary objective is to ensure seamless and punctual freight pickup and delivery, encompassing shipments from vendors to Amazon fulfillment centers (FCs) and from Amazon FCs to carrier hubs. In situations involving deviations from standard operations, TOC intervenes to resolve the issue and proactively informs all relevant stakeholders about the progress of the resolution. Beyond immediate problem-solving, TOC is also responsible for identifying trends in network exceptions, implementing process automation, and recommending process enhancements to optimize operational efficiency. This crucial aspect involves continuous network monitoring and in-depth analysis of network data.

Overall, TOC plays a pivotal role in maintaining the smooth and efficient operation of Amazon’s transportation network, directly influencing Amazon’s ability to consistently meet customer delivery promises.

Responsibilities of a Transportation Operations Specialist:

A Transportation Operations Specialist within TOC is responsible for facilitating clear and efficient communication between various stakeholders, including transportation carriers, hubs, and warehouses. Their core function is to address and resolve potential issues that could adversely impact customer experience and business continuity. Transportation Operations Specialists within TOC work across two primary verticals: Inbound and Outbound operations.

Inbound Operations focuses on managing relationships between vendors, carriers, and fulfillment centers. This includes ensuring that freight pickups occur promptly and that deliveries to FCs are completed according to pre-determined schedules. A Transportation Operations Specialist in Inbound operations addresses any issues that may arise during the complete lifecycle of a shipment, from initial pickup to final delivery.

Outbound Operations focuses on managing relationships between fulfillment centers, carriers, and carrier hubs. A key objective is ensuring the timely departure of trucks from the FC, enabling the delivery of customer orders as promised. A Transportation Operations Specialist in Outbound operations addresses any potential issues occurring during the lifecycle of freight as it leaves the FC and makes its way to the customer’s premises.

A Transportation Operations Specialist is expected to provide timely and effective solutions to problems by leveraging internal tools for research and data retrieval, and by making informed decisions in real-time. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to understand operational requirements, analyze data to identify trends, and prioritize customer experience without sacrificing efficiency. A fundamental understanding of logistics is essential, along with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Furthermore, the Transportation Operations Specialist should be capable of developing innovative process improvements and possess the drive to see those improvements implemented successfully.

Responsibilities

• Effective communication with external stakeholders, including carriers, vendors, and suppliers, as well as internal stakeholders, encompassing Retail, Finance, Software Support, and Fulfillment Centers.
• Proficiency in extracting data from various databases using tools such as Excel, Access, SQL, and other data management systems is desirable for ad-hoc reporting and analysis.
• Developing and interpreting performance metrics to contribute to improved business outcomes.
• Defining business and functional requirements for Amazon technology teams responsible for developing and enhancing the software systems and tools utilized by TOC.
• Rapidly assess the business impact of identified trends and make sound decisions based on the available data.
• Systematically escalate problems or data discrepancies to the appropriate owners and teams, and diligently follow up on resolutions to ensure their successful implementation.
• Effectively manage time within various constraints to meet critical business needs, while simultaneously measuring and identifying activities performed.
• Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbally and in written form, with the ability to create comprehensive narratives outlining weekly findings and variances from established goals, and present these findings in review forums.
• Provide real-time customer support by working in a 24/7 operational environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 10-24 months of relevant work experience.
• Strong communication skills are essential, as the Transportation Operations Specialist will be facilitating the flow of information between external teams.
• Proficiency in advanced Excel functionalities, including pivot tables and vlookups.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
