Job Description
India's National Highways are experiencing a dramatic increase in pedestrian accidents. The alarming rise in pedestrian fatalities, from 9,462 to 10,160 in a single year—an average of one death per hour—demands immediate attention. Despite the existence of Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), a significant number of pedestrians continue to cross at grade level, underscoring a critical gap in safety measures. This situation highlights the urgent need to improve safety for pedestrians and other Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), particularly by addressing the underutilization of FOBs and enhancing crossing infrastructure.
To tackle this pressing issue, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Highway Operators Association - India (HOAI) are collaborating to host a hackathon dedicated to developing innovative solutions that enhance pedestrian safety on national highways. This initiative presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a project with the potential to significantly improve road safety and save lives. Participants will be challenged to devise practical and effective strategies to address the alarming statistics and improve pedestrian safety on Indian national highways.
